Homeowner questions

Is natural stone right for your bathroom?

The questions to ask about the exact stone, its finish, installation and everyday care before choosing it for a bathroom.

Natural Onyx marble bath surround

Natural stone can bring depth and variation to a bathroom, but it should be chosen with its intended use and maintenance in mind. Start with the exact material, not just a broad label such as marble or limestone.

A veined appearance alone does not tell you whether a surface is natural stone or porcelain. Check the exact product before choosing cleaning or sealing products.

Ask about the particular stone and finish

Find out the product name, finish, thickness and where the supplier confirms it can be used. A wall, bathroom floor and shower floor are different applications.

Ask to see a representative selection rather than one small sample. Variation is part of the appeal, but it is better to understand the range before the material arrives.

Consider how that variation might work across the room. A quiet overall palette and a more pronounced vein pattern can create quite different impressions, even within similar colours.

Understand the care before committing

The Natural Stone Institute advises choosing cleaning products that suit the stone. Acidic products can damage acid sensitive materials, and abrasive products may scratch some surfaces. Use the supplier’s care instructions and a suitable cleaner rather than assuming a general bathroom spray will be appropriate.

If a low maintenance routine is your main priority, explain what that means for your household when discussing materials. Seeing samples and understanding the care requirements is more useful than treating all natural stone as one category.

Check whether sealing is appropriate

Some stones benefit from an appropriate impregnator; others may not need one. Sealing can improve resistance to staining, but does not make the material stain proof.

The product choice and any repeat application should follow the stone supplier and sealer manufacturer’s advice. A surface treatment also does not replace the waterproofing required within the installation.

Bring material and installation decisions together

Share the supplier’s technical information with the installer before ordering. Weight, thickness, backing and application can affect how the material needs to be handled and fixed.

Agree exposed edges, layout and adjoining finishes at the same time. Those details help the stone sit comfortably within the room.
