Homeowner questions
What affects the cost of a bathroom installation?
A useful way to understand a bathroom quotation, from the existing room and preparation to the materials and finishing details.

A bathroom quotation makes more sense when you can see what sits behind it. Two rooms with the same floor area can involve very different amounts of work. Before comparing a total, look at the room being created and what each installer has allowed for.
Start with the existing room
Keeping fittings in broadly the same positions is a different brief from moving a shower, changing drainage or reworking the layout. The condition of the walls and floor matters too. Until existing finishes are removed, some parts of the construction may remain unknown.
Ask how any additional preparation would be identified, discussed and agreed. That conversation is more useful than assuming every hidden condition is covered by a single figure.
Separate materials from installation
A quotation should make it clear who is supplying the tiles, fittings, sanitaryware and installation materials. A tile price alone does not tell you the installed cost.
Size, pattern, thickness and the number of detailed cuts all influence the work involved. A herringbone wall, a recessed niche and a straightforward tiled surface are different tasks, even when the area is similar.
Agree the details before comparing prices
Make a short schedule of what you expect. Include:
- Which walls and floors will be tiled.
- Whether the layout or plumbing positions will change.
- The tile dimensions and proposed pattern.
- Niches, shelves, exposed corners and edge finishes.
- Removal of existing finishes and disposal.
- Waterproofing, preparation and coordination with other trades.
- Who supplies each item and whether VAT is included where applicable.
If two quotations describe different scopes, asking for clarification can be more helpful than comparing the final numbers.
Leave room for informed decisions
You do not need to know every product before making an enquiry. It does help to distinguish what is decided from what is still open. An allowance for an undecided item should be clearly identified, so you know which choices could change the total.
For an initial discussion, send photographs, approximate room dimensions, your location and any drawings or tile references. We can then talk through the installation you have in mind.
