A bathroom shaped around full height quartz

For this first floor bathroom in Knutsford, Cheshire, we installed 20 mm quartz supplied by Omega Stone. The largest slabs measured 2,450 mm tall by 1,200 mm wide, bringing broad areas of veining to a room with exposed timber beams, large windows and a gold coloured freestanding bath.

Our scope covered the preparation, waterproofing and installation of the quartz throughout the bathroom, including the walls, floor, window reveals and vanity surfaces. Plumbing was handled separately by another tradesperson.

From templates to the final fit

We templated the quartz for Omega Stone to cut, taking the room’s openings and features into account. Once the pieces arrived on site, we made the adjustments needed to bring the edges, joints and adjoining surfaces into alignment.

The templating and fitting had to work together. Large pieces needed to sit accurately around the windows, shower and existing timber, while keeping the overall layout consistent across the room.

Getting the slabs to the first floor

Access was a significant part of this installation. The largest pieces were estimated to weigh around 150 kg, and the bathroom was on the first floor.

We erected an external scaffold to bring the slabs up from outside, with four people involved in the lifting. Once inside the bathroom, restricted space meant two of us carried out the fitting. Moving the slabs into the room and positioning them for installation were distinct stages of the work.

Vein alignment and fine joints

The details we are particularly pleased with are the vein alignment, neat 1.5 mm grout lines and resin joints. With slabs of this size, the relationship between neighbouring pieces is especially visible, so we paid close attention to how the pattern and joints came together.

The pale veining sits alongside the warmth of the exposed timber and gold coloured fittings. Around the windows and vanity, the fitted quartz carries the same material through the smaller details of the room.

The gallery includes progress photographs as well as views taken after our quartz installation was complete. At that stage, the remaining plumbing work was still to be finished by the separate plumber.

For a bathroom using substantial quartz slabs, the installation needs to be considered alongside the material selection, room details and access.
